The Curriculum
The new Heart of Mary School now takes an innovative new approach to Christian faith-based learning with the Learning Communities (LCs) teaching model. This new academic program matches teachers to the subjects of their greatest strength and interest throughout the K-8 curriculum. Here's how it works:
Learning Communities run in grade blocks
- K-2nd grade
- 3-5 grades
- 6-8 grades
- Pre-K is its own separate unit
Each LC is comprised of 3 teachers:
- A Math/Science teacher
- A Writing/Reading teacher
- A Social Studies/Theology teacher
Each teacher teaches all 3 grade levels of their respective LC
Ex: A Writing/Reading teacher teaches K, 1st, and 2nd grade students in those subjects
This unique approach results in:
PASSIONATE TEACHERS
Our generalist-certified educators teach only in the areas of their greatest strength and interest.
STRONG TEACHER/STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS
Teaching the same students across 3 grades allows teachers, students, and families to create deep and meaningful relationships.
HANDS-ON ATTENTION
With small class sizes and 3 teachers teaching the same students, learning progress is closely monitored throughout the year.
Religion
Academics
Promotion
Our religion program provides our students and faculty with the opportunity to practice Christian values and principles in our everyday lives. All students are required to participate in Friday Mass and other religious activities that occur throughout the year.
The academic program includes:
- Religion
- Mathematics
- Language Arts
- Science
- Social Studies
The course of study for K-8 grades meets all the requirements of the Archdiocese of Mobile, the State of Alabama, and AdvancED.
Student report cards are issued four times a year.
Parent-teacher conferences are held at the end of the first and third quarters.
Daily grade information and quarterly interim reports are available online at SOLUTIONS for grades 1-8.
PROMOTION
Promotion in the Archdiocese is based on the maturity of the child, achievement of at least the minimum course work, and regular attendance.
RETENTION
In grades 1 and 2, at least two I's in reading or two I's in Math would result in retention.
In grades 3 - 8, a yearly average of âFâ in two major academic areas would result in retention. Major academic areas include: Religion, English, Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science.
